Abstract
A total number of 261 recrods of Murrah buffaloes progeny of 91 sires at the Central Institute
For Research on Buffalo Hisar (Haryana), over a period of 16 years from 1986 to 2001 (year
of first calving) were used to study the production performance of Murrah buffaloes for the
purpose to determine the impact of genetic and non-genetic factors viz., season and period on
production traits and to estimate the genetic parameter of production traits such as,
AFC,FSP,FLL,FDP,FCI, FPY, FLMY and LTLMY.
The effect of non-genetic factors like seasons, were found to be significant for FLL, FOP,
FPY, FSP, FCI but non-significant in FLMY. While, differences between periods were found to
be significant for all the traits except FOP and FCI.
The least squares means of first lactation production traits and life-time lactation milk yield
for seasons of AFC,FSP,FLL,FDP,FCI,FPY,FLMY and L TLMY is ranged from 1582.08±38.31
to 1595.57±26.60 days, 131 .75±27.94 to 142.49±22.90 days, 350.11±11.75 to 381 .81±14.32
days, 209.39±21.73 to 256.82±20.67 days, 581.49±26.99 to 636.05±25.70 days,7.88±0.24 to
8.51 ±0.25 Kg, 1730.10±55.28 to 1784.82±67.38 Kg,9037.56±628.41 to 10350. 70±734.62 Kg,
with over all rpean 1590.81±17.74 days, 137.91±7.60 days, 367.81±6.79 days, 607.06±15.24
days, 8.23±0.14 Kg, 1759.21 ±31.94 Kg, 9654.39±351.52 Kg, respectively. While for periods
were -1273.68±98.99 to 1883.76±87.58 days, 120.98±8.03 to 334.65±73.72 days,
285.28±104.67 to 414.95±60.45 days, 150.83±67.82 to 301.65±99.33 days, 527.02±83.30 to
727.46±121.91 days, 7.15±1.15 to 9.11±0.83 Kg, 1394.21±712.51 to 2239.78±284.46 Kg.
6483.57±1606.82 to 13268.03±2506.43 Kg respectively.
The heritability estimates for AFC, FSP, FLL, FOP, FCI, FPY, FLMY, and L TLMY were
estimated as 0.419±0.288, 0.422±0.288, 0.295±0.160, 0.080±0.181, 0.047±0.221,
0.079±0.180, 0.001 ±0.188, and 0.258±0.284 respectively.
The genetic correlation of AFC with FSP. FLL, FCI, FPY, FLMY & LTLMY were positive in
the range of 0.173±0.665 to 0.995±0.007, and negative with FOP as -0.07±0.937. The
phenotypic correlations of AFC with other traits are positive and significant, while negative with
FOP. Significant Positive genetic and phenotypic correlation of FSP with FLL, FOP, FCI,
FLPY, FLMY were in the range of 0.073±1.002 to 0.937±0.008, and 0.007 to 0.508,
respectively & also significant. The genetic correlation of FLL with FLMY. FCI, were estimated
as positive while, negative with FLPY. However, phenotypic correlation was found to be
positive & significant. The positive genetic correlation of FOP with FCI, FLMY and negative
genetic correlation with FLPY, While, phenotypic correlations are negative & significant with
FLPY, FLMY except FCI. The genetic correlations of FCI with other traits were positive while,
phenotypic correlations were negative with FLPY, FLMY as -0.062 and. 0.140, respectively.
The phenotypic and genetic correlation of FLPY with FLMY was est1mated as 0.564 or
0 858±0.652. The genetic correlations of L TLMY with AFC, FSP, FLL, FOP, FCI, FLPY, FLMY were
0.173±0.655, 0.233±0.661, ·0.771±0.450, -1 .794±4.451, 0.889±0.233 & 0.778±0.542
respectively. While phenotypic correlation were -0.014, ..0.011, .0.088, ·0.025, 0 197, 0.200,
0.417 respectively.
