Abstract
Genetic Diversity Analysis of Abelmoschus escu/entus is important for its
characterization. The genetic diversity of 22 genotypes of A. esculentus, 20 random primers
were used of which 18 primers gave amplification and 15 resulted in polymorphic, scorable
and reproducible results. On the basis of resolving power, primer NJ-5, 6 and 3 were most
significant as they are able to recognize all 22 genotypes. The random primers used for
estimating gene diversity were found most suitable for the purpose as they showed sufficient
value. Cluster analysis clearly showed that some genotypes are closely related while some are
significantly distinct. The study did not show the separation of individuals on the basis of
their response towards YVMV infection. The protein profile of 22 genotypes of A. esculentus
was also prepared and compared with RAPD data set. The present study suggests that RAPD
and total protein profile among 22 genotypes of A. esculentus showed that both technique had
excellent discriminating power and could accurately detect the structure of genetic diversity.
