Abstract
Muzaffernagri sheep is one of the most important, mutton breeds of India.
The native breeding tract of this breed is Muzaffemager, Meerut, Bulandshare & Bag pat
districts of Utter Pradesh. However, it also produce fleece of coarse carpet quality. A
questionnorie-based survey was conducted to collect information from 96 sheep farmers
located in 24 villages of 6 blocks of Meerut district of Utter Pradesh on reproductive
problems viz, Anoestrus, Repeat Breeding, Abortion, Dystocia and its management
through ethno-veterinary practices followed in the Muzaffemagri sheep. The overall
incidence of Anoestrus, Repeat breeding, Abortion and Dystocia among the
Muzaffemagri ewe were 5.62, 5.53, 7.29 and 2.09 percent, respectively. The overall
frequencies of incidences in various seasons were found as Anoestrus (4.47-10.60),
Repeat Breeding (3.84-9.09), Abortion (4.73-13.33) and Dystocia (1 .74- 3.33) percent,
respectively. The effect of Seasons, lambing orders, farmer categories and locations
statistically showed non-significant effect on Anoestrus problems. Whereas, highly
significant effect showed by farmer categories on repeat breeding and lambing order on
Dystocia cases. In the study area, most of the sheep's farmers using locally available
herbal treatment/ITKs to overcome the various reproductive problems i.e. Sesamum or
Til (Sesamum indicum) and Sonth (Zingiber officinale)+Gur in case of Anoestrus. In
Repeat Breeding: Bartey (Hardum vulgare) and Mehandi powder (Lawsonia alba).
Whereas, Pariafin oil, and Gretkumri (A. Vera) in Abortion and Ghee (butter oil) Neem
(Azadirchta indica) leaves etc. in Dystocia cases. Therefore, the present study shall be
very useful in future to manage the reproductive disorders in this breed.
