Abstract

In world sugarcane cultivation is done about 22.72 million hectare land with production of 1590. 7 million tonnes with productivity 69.98 tones/heel. In India sugarcane was cultivated about 4.42 million hectare land and produce 285.03 million tonnes with productivity of 64.53 tones/hectare. Uttar Pradesh contributes about 50 per cent in area (2.08 million hectare) and production (1 09.05 million tonnes) with productivity of (607 quintal/hectare). The present study was attempt on "Economic analysis of Sugarcane production in district Meerut of Western Uttar Pradesh" with of following objectives (i) To work out the cost and returns of sugarcane production for different size group of farms. (ii}To examine the resource use efficiency in sugarcane production on different size group of farms.(iii}To study production and marketing constraints of sugarcane production/or different size group offarms.(iv}To study the marketing pall ern of sugarcane in the study area. From the selected district, two blocks were selected purposively on the basis of highest area under the crop. A total four villages were selected randomly and from the list of the farmer of the selected village, total 80 farmer, 33small (up to 2 hectare),27 medium(2-4 hectare},20 large (>4 hectare) were selected for the collection of data. To meet the objectives suitable statistical tools were employed. The cost of cultivation of sugarcane planted was Rs 89712 and share of operational cost (36%) land rent (34. 77%) and material cost (25.5%) respectively and the cost of cultivation of sugarcane ratoon was Rs 78668 and share of operational cost (43.4%) land rent (39.6%) and material cost (12.5%) respectively In case of sugarcane planted, within the size group comparison of MVP (marginal value productivity) of the reso.urces found the MVP of irrigation and TMH was found positive and statistically significant an more than one size group farmers and in case of sugarcane ratoon the MVP of human labour and irrigation was found positive and significant on more than one size farms. In sugarcane cultivation constraints related to production and marketing facing by the respondents was labour and high rate(77.5%), lack of knowledge about applied balance fertilizer and other nutrient(66.25%), high yielding variety (18. 75%) and poor electric supply(65%). In marketing constraint the main problem was late starting and early closing of sugar mills(75.5%), improper weighing system(50%) delay and i"egular supply order(31.25%) and poor communication facility(20%). In the prevalent area more than 90 per cent of the sugarcane produce supplied to the sugar mills and other supplied to village Indus try.
