Abstract
Ninety two rice genotypes were subjected to DNA finger printing and were
evaluated for presence of sd1 (semi-dwarf 1) gene. Morphological data for height
was taken for 92 genotypes, at four different growth stages: seedling stage, tillering
stage, panicle stage and adult stage. Out of these 92 genotypes, only five were
observed tall, remaining were semi-dwarf. Three gene specific primes were used
namely: sd 1, h and RT01. Out of these three, h primer showed amplification with all
the tall and semi-dwarf varieties. 'sd1' and 'RT01' showed amplification with only
semi-dwarf varieties. 'sd 1' allele was present in 24 varieties, RT01 allele was present
in 29 varieties and both these alleles were present in 33 varieties. this indicates that
a rice variety can never be tall if it possess the sd1 gene. There are some semidwarf
varieties which do not show amplification with 'sd1' and 'RT01', this indicates
that a variety can be dwarf or semi-dwarf even in absence of sd1 gene because of
the effect of other dwarfing genes not considered presently
