Abstract
The field experiment was conducted during Kharif- 2013 at Crop Research
Centre (Chirori farm) of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel University of Agriculture and
Technology, Meerut (U.P.) for the "Investigation of susceptibility of sorghum
germplasm/varieties against major insect pests" in a Randomized Block Design (R.B.D.)
with three replications, consisting twenty seven germplasm of sorghum were evaluated
for their reaction against sorghum shoot fly, stem borer, ear head beetle, gray weevil
and leaf roller.
In the experiment dead hearts of shoot fly start increasing observed first during in
16th to 221h July (29th standard weeks). And maximum dead hearts recorded during crop
season from 13th t<:> 19th August (33th standard week). In the experiment dead hearts of
stem borer start increasing from 23th to 29th July (30th standard weeks) and maximum
dead hearts of Chilo parte/Ius (Rond) were recorded during crop season from 20th to
26th August (34th standard weeks).
On the basis of observation categorization the sorghum varieties SPV-2132 and
CSF-21 F were found resistant against shoot fly represent least 0-5 per cent dead
hearts/20 plants after 14, 21 and 28 days of germination, while the varieties KJI-61, IS-
2205, SPV-2189 and SPV-2190 have 0-5 per cent least dead hearts were resistant to
stem borer after 30, 45 and 55 days of germination. The sorghum cultivars IS-
2205(Res), SPV-2058(2), SPV-2128, SPV-2194 and SPV-2190 having lesser 0-1
number of larvae per 1 0 plants infestation of leaf roller found resistant after 30, 40 and
50 days of germination. The varieties SPV-2187, SPV-2185, SPV-2190, SPV-2130, HC-
308 and SPV-2194 found lesser 0 to 1.5 adults/5 plants resistant against gray weevil
after 30 and 60 days of germination and varieties SPV-2058(2), IS-2205(Res), SPV-
2194 and SPV-2190 have 0 to 1.5 adult/5 plants showed their resistant against ear
head beet e after 60 and 90 days of germination.
