Studies on the Performance of Strawberry (Fragaria X Ananassa) Varieties in Plains Of Western Uttar Pradesh

Abstract

Thesis Topic: "Studies On The Performance Of Strawberry (Fragaria x ananassa) Varieties In Plains Of Western Uttar Pradesh" The present investigation entitled "Studies on the performance of strawberry (Fragaria x ananassa) varieties in plains of Western Uttar Pradesh" was conducted at Horticultural Research Centre of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel University of Agriculture & Technology, Meerut during the year of 2014-2015. The experiment was conducted with using eleven different strawberry cultivars .namely Chandler, Douglas, Selva, Confuctura, Etna, Gorella, Belrubi, Brigthton, Sea-scape, Pajaro and Dana. The experiment was planned in a Randomized Block Design. During experimentation, the various vegetative, flowering, fruit and physiological characters were recorded and analyzed them. The main aim of study was to find out suitable strawberry cultivar under western Uttar Pradesh condition according to vegetative, flowering, fruiting etc. On the basis of results obtained, most of the strawberry varieties perform well in western Uttar Pradesh conditions in relation to yield and yield attributing characters. These results were found more or less similar to temperate region. During the study marked variation among the Strawberry cultivars was observed for vegetative reproductive and bio-chemi9al parameters. Among the cultivars Chandler was found most appropriate cultivar in terms of heavy yielder and performed better for plant height, flower duration, number of flower per runner, fruit length and breadth, berry set (%), berry weight (g), number of berry per plant , yield, TSS. The cultivar like confuctura was found sweetest in taste, while Pajaro had highest titratable acidity. On the basis of performance and diverse conditions of western Uttar Pradesh, Chandler, Douglas, Confuctura, Gorella, Belrubi, Brighton, Seascape and Pajaro were found most suitable for commercial cultivation.
