Abstract
An investigation entitled '"Studies on genetic variability for n1orphological and
qualitative characters in bael (A.egle 1narn1elos Correa) in Western Uttar Pradesh conditions."
was carri~d out at I~orticultural Research Centre along with Lab. of Deptt. of 1-Iorticulture of
SVJ>UA&T" Meerut during 2013-14 and 2014-15 to study the genetic variability ..
interrelationship and genetic divergence in fiJty genotypes of bael. The study involves PCV &.
GCV" heritability & genetic advance, correlation &. path coe1licicnts analysis and genetic
div~rgencc (02
) based on sixteen n1orphological and qualitative characters under t\VO
individual environn1ents and con1b.ined over environn1ents (pool data of both environtncnts).
Study revealed highly significan~ diilerences an1oi1g the genotypes" the estimates of PCV were
found higher than GCV for all the studied traits. '"rhc heritability estin1ates in broad sense and
genetic advance wer~ high for fruit yield per tree" fruit pulp weight~ fruit weight" seed \Veight
per J)·u.it~ nun1ber of fruits per tree~ ascorbic acid and skull weight in both the individual
cnvironn1ents and con1bined over environntents. Correlation studies indicated the higher
n1agnitude of genotypic correlation than the corresponding phenotypic ones. Yield per tree
had positive and highly significant correlation with fruit pulp weight fruit weight" fruit

soluble solids at phenotypic and genotypic levels. l)ath coefficient analysis revealed highest
direct positive efTcct of fruit weight'\ nun1ber of fruits per tree'l fruit pulp 'vveight and ascorbic
acid to\vards fruit yield per tree. Genetic divergence studies grouped all the genotypes into
eight diverse clustt;rS under botJ1 environn1ents and cotnbined over envh·onn1ents. Clustering
pattern cl1anged \Vith the environn1ents w·hich indicated that 0 2-statistics are highly intluenc~d
by the environn1ent. Maxin1un1 genetic divergence \Vas observed for fruit pulp \veight fruit
