Abstract
Thesis Title: Association of first lactation milk yield with cumulative part
lactation milk yield and life time lactation milk yield in Murrah buffaloes.
In the present investigation "Association of first lactation milk yield with
cumulative .part lactation milk yield and life time lactation milk yield in Murrah buffaloes."
The Murrah (Bubalus bubalis) is an important dairy buffalo breed in india. India is an
agricultural country with 1/5 of the world population of cattle and more than Y2 of world's
buffaloes which are the back -bone of the agriculture and play a major role in the rural
economy. However the budget allocation for animal husbandry and dairy development is less
than 1 0 per cent of the agricultural sector, but its contribution to the GOP from agriculture is
reported to more than 31 per cent. Uttar Pradesh is the largest milk producer state in the
country with a total milk production of 12.93 million tones and Buffalo is the major source of
milk production. The present investigation was conducted on 222 murrah buffaloes
maintained at central institute of research for buffaloes, Hisar, Haryana. Murrah is the··
most preferred breed among the various buffalo breeds of India. The sires are routinely
evaluated on the basis of complete milk yield records of their daughters. If the required
time for judging the animal breeding value is ·shorted, it will be resulte~ in increased
selection intensity and increased genetic gain per unit, time. The prime objective of the
investigation was to predict 305 days milk yield by using the part lactation and
cumulative part lactation milk yield. The overall averages for part and cumulative part
milk yield along with their standard errors, standard deviation and coefficient of variation
have been presented in table 4.1. The table revealed that the averages of first lactation
cumulative part lactation milk yield ,have been showing consistently increasing trained
with the stages of the lactation, the coefficient of variation of the cumulative part
lactation milk yield showed a range varying from 20.808% (30day) to 21.952% (120day).
The milk yield at 30, 60, 90, 120, 150, 180, 210, 240, 270 and 305 days were utilized to
predict the 305 days first lactation milk yield from cumulative part lactation milk yield
regression method. The values of R2 coefficient of determination indicate the efficiency
and accuracy of prediction and showed in a range of 77.08 to 78.70% for 60 days to 210··
days of cumulative part lactation milk yield except for 90 days (9.32%) and 30 days
(12.92). The highest value of R2 (78.70%) was observed for 240 days, however,
differences in R2 were not found for 60 days, 120 days, 150 days, 180 days, 210 days,
240 days and 270 days of cumulative part lactation milk yield, and showed almost similar
predictability.
