An experiment entitled "Efficacy of new insecticides against sugarcane borer complex" with seven treatments including control (no insecticide use) and three replication in RBD was conducted during at Crop Research Centre (CRC) of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel University of Agriculture and Technology Meerut (U.P.)- 250110. An extensive survey on distribution of the major borers of sugarcane crop i.e. early shoot, root and top borer in 4 different varieties in plant and ratoon crop in the six districts of western Uttar Pradesh. The shoot borer population was frequently maximum (4.78%) in Saharanpur district and minimum (2.77%) in Meerut than ratoon crop maximum (2.81) and minimum (1 .68) in Baghpat and Meerut, respectively. Whereas, top borer and root borer population were observed on ratoon crop. The maximum top borer infestation 2.92 & 1.81 on ratoon and plant crop respectively. Root borer infestation was highest (35.27) in ratoon and (18.54) in plant crop. On the basis of data of two years on the treatments with chemical insecticide i.e. Fipronil 0.3 GR @ 25 kg/h was found best among all the treatments with minimum shoot borer infestation 1.25 & 1.50 per cent and top borer infestation 3.84 & 3.81 per cent during 2007-08 and 2008-09, respectively. This treatment was also found best with highest cane yield (78.61 & 78.15 t/ha), maximum increase in yield (23.06 & 23.81 t/ha) and in cane height (204.16 em) over rest treatments, and chlorpyriphos 10 G @ 25 kg /ha was found superior in the control of root borer with minimum (1 .38 & 1.74) per cent infestation. On the other hand the effect of insecticides on the population of predators (Spiders and lady bird beetle) was also observed in the treated plots. All the insecticides showed adverse impact on the population of these predators. The maximum numbers (1.49) of predators were observed in untreated plot and minimum (0 .68) in the phorate 10 G and all the treatments were at par effect on predators population. The insecticides were also showed effect on the yield and other physical characters of plant such as height, millable cane etc. the highest cane yield gave by the fipronil 0.3 GR (78.38 t/ha) followed by imidacloprid 17.8 SL (74.89 t/ha) and minimum yield (54.94 t/ha) was found in control plot. The maximum net returns (Rs 25500/ha) gave fipronil 0.3 GR treated plot with cost benefit ratio 1:6.71 and followed by lmidacloprid 17.8 SL with net return (Rs 22577.50) and highest cost benefit ratio (1 :9.56).
