Abstract
In the present study ultrasonographic findings of abdominal viscera have been
described in 30 clinically healthy adult Barbari goats. A linear transducer (firequency:
5 to 10 MHz) was used to scan standing, non-sedated goats. Rumen was visualized
from left 9th to 12th intercostal spaces (ICSs) and left flank. Ruminal wall thickness
and distance between rumen and left abdominal walll was found 2.47 ± 0.30 mm and
3.13 ± 0.51 mm, respectively, Reticulum appeared as a crescent-shaped adjacent to
diaphragm. Mostly monophasic reticular contractions were observed. Omasum was
visible from right 6th to 10th ICSs medial to liver. Omasal wall thickness was found
2.51 ± 0.14 mm. Abomasum appeared as a heterogencous, moderately echogenic
structure. Intestine lumen diameter was found 5.37 ± 0.68 mm. Liver was viewed at
the 7th to 9th ICSs. Liver capsule thickness was 0.56 ± 0.025 mm. Portal vein was
circular to oval on cross-section with stellate ramifications. Gallbladder was pear
shaped and seen at the 9th to 10th ICSs. Gallbladder length and width was found
17.11 ± 2.88 mm and 9,79 ± 0.39 mm, respectively. Gallbladder wall thickness was
0.71 0.05 mm. Gallbladder surface area and circumference was 245.50 ± 48.41 mm2
and 67 7.79 mm, respectively. The left and right kidneys were seen from the right
flank. Right kidney was seen at 12th ICS and below the lumbar vertebrae Li to La.
The left kidney was seen below the lumbar vertebrae La to Ly. Right renal capsule,
renall cortex and renal medulla thickness were found 0.55 ± 0.02 mm, 5.23 ± 0.26 mm
and 6.04 ± 0.34 mm, respectively. Right kidney length and thickness were 36.33
1.42 mm and 27.67 ± 0.88 mm, respectively. The left renal capsule, renal cortex and
renal medella thickness were found 0.55 ± 0.07 mm, 5.74 0.48 mm and 7.49 ± 0.57
mm, respectively, Left kidney length and thickness were 39.26 ± 1.62 mm and 32.04
1.02 mm, respectively. Spleen was located from left 8th to 12th ICSs. Capsule
thickness and spleen thickness was found 0.49 ± 0.04 mm and 20.62 ± 1.34 mm,
respectively. The ultrasonographic findings described in this study can be used as
references for diagnosis of morphologic changes in respective visceral organs of
Barbari goat
