The present investigation was undertaken to genetic analysis or yield and quality parameters including fatty acid profile from 24 Parents and 80 F, crosses Line x Tester design In Indian mustard (Brassica juncea (L) Czem.&Coss) at Crop Research Center, S V P university of Agn. & Tech. meerut (U P.) A two-year study was earned out during rabi 2006-07 and 2007-08 with 104 treatments of lndran mustard to assess the nature or vanabilrty, association for yield, oil, latty aCid profile, path analysis or yteld, orl. fatty aCid profile. Analysis of vanance rndteated significant differences for Y19kl and alllhe quality characters tnvestigaled The environmental effects were s.gmficant for erucic.oleic, linoleic and lenolenic acid and lhe rnnuence or environmental !actors appeared to be less on other characters.the genotype x enVIronment interactions were srgnrficant and non- srgnrficant for all the characters, hence the data were pooled over the years and discussed on the basis of mean of two years.1. to estimate the general and specific combinrng ability variances and their effects 2. to estimate the heterosis over mid parent 3. to study the direct (PCV,GCV, heritability, genetic advance) and indirect (correlation, Path analysts) selection parameters for various quantitative characters in Indian mustard. The data were recorded on seed yield per plant and 18 other traits.the analysis or variance revealed significant differences among the genotypes.the mean degree of dominance (!i'sl!i'g)O$ exceeded unity for these lralts showrng over domrnance except days to 50% flowering and days to matunty However, preponderance of adlfrtive types of gene action along with partial dominance was recorded for days to 50% ftowering and days to maturity Hrghly sign meant variances were nobced for both general and specffic combining abrlity lor aU lhe characters. The magnrtude of gca and sea vanalCeS.for all lhe attnbutes indicated that both add1tive and non-additive gertetic effects were involved in the expresSlon or these tratts.EC-399301,VMS-7-3,1C-57845,VMS-7-15,VMS-6-2 and varuna were good general combiner for yield VMS-7- 7,VMS-7-3,VMS-7-2,VMS-7-6,VMS-6-8 and Varuna were good general combiner lor oil content.VMS-6-2,VMS-7· 4,VMS-7-5,VMS-6-4,VMS-7-3 and Kranti were good general combiner for erucic acid. High significant sea effects crosses were VMS-7-2 x Vaibhav, VMS-7-6 x Vardan.VMS-7-15 x Varuna. VMS-7-8 x Vaibhav and VMS-7-3 x Varuna for good specific combiner for yield. and IC-57845 x Kranti, VMS-7-8 x Kranti, VMS-7-15 xVardan. VMS-7-2 x Kranu and VMS-7 -12 x Vardan for good specifiC combiner for oil content. and observed significant negatiVe sea effect cross VMS-6-2 x Vardan, VMS-7-4 x Vardan. EC-367881 x Vaibhav, VMS-7-2 x Kranti, VMS-6-1 X Kranti for good specrfic combiner lor erucic acid highly significant heterosis ror seed Yl8ld per plant were recoded in VMS-7-15 x Varuna. EC-399301 x Vaibhav, VMS-7-2 x Vaibhav, VMS-7-ll x Vatbhav, VMS-7-3 x Vaibhav. VMS-7-3 X Varuna. EC-399301 x Varuna and EC-399301 x Kranti for yield, 011 content and qua!rty parameters.on the basis of computed genetic parameters simple selection or pedigree method of breeding with rntennating in ea~y segregating generalion has been suggested for the exploitation of additive genetic variance lor tile srmuttaneous exploitation of both addrhve and !\On-additive gene acti . Breeding method such as biparental mating followed by recurrent selection was suggested.
