Abstract

For present investigation entitled "Studies on management of stem borer, Chilo parte/Ius (Swinhoe) in maize" the field experiments were conducted in randomized block design with three replications of seven treatments for two consecutive years i.e. "kharit. 2008 and 2009 at entomological research block of crop research centre. Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Umversity of Agnculture & Technology, Meerut (U.P ) 250110 In extensive study, ten spec1es of insects belongmg to 6 orders were observed to be associated with the maize at experimentation location during the period of study. Among them, Chilo parte/Ius (Swmhoe) was found as major pest. Maize aph1d and leaf hopper were also found moderately damagmg the crop. The other insect-pests recorded on the crop were of less importance and extent of their damage was found without much economic loss. Among all the treatments, indoxacarb 14.5 SC@ 500 ml/ha was found best with minimum Infestation of Chilo parte/Ius 9.99 per cent (25 DAS) and 11 75 per cent (40 DAS) followed by endosulfan 35 EC@ 1.5 litlha. The max1mum infestation of 36.23 per cent (25 DAS) and 38.29 per cent (40 DAS) was recorded w1th untreated control The minimum leaf injury of 1.15 {25 DAS) and 1.30 (40DAS) was recorded in plot treated with indoxacarb followed by endosulfan and 1midacloprid The minimum number of dead hearts 2.69 (20 DAS) and 4.00 (40 DAS) were found with treatment of indoxacarb and next 1n order were the treatments of maize+cowpea (intercropping) and 1midacloprid. The expenmental crop treated with lndoxacarb was found best with min1mum dead heart of 6.65 per cent and followed by maize+cowpea {intercroppmg) with 8.50 per cent dead heart. The minimum pooled tunnel length (1 37 em) was found 1n mdoxacarb and followed by endosu!fan With stem tunneling of 3 53 em All the treatments except ma1ze+cowpea (mterctOpplllQ) and T chi/oms were significantly supenor 1n reduong the aphid and leaf hoppel' populatiOn The m1n11nUm aphid population of 3 41 , 5 05, aod 615 at 30, 45 and 60 DAS respectiVely was recorded 1n the treatment of 1ndoxacarb and followed by endosulfan L1ke WISe lndoxacarb was also found best treatment With m1mmum populatiOn of 2 91 , 3 72 and 5 08 at 30, 45 and 60 DAS, respecttvely. The second best treatment tn reduang leaf hopper population was endosulfan The mimmum populat1on of cocctnellids of 3 03, 2 33 and 2.33 at 30, 45 and 60 DAS, respectively was recorded tn the treatment of tndoxacarb The maximum population of 11 00, 14 28 and 16 05 at 30, 45 and 60 DAS. respectively was recorded m l.f'ltreated control and followed by matze+cowpea (mteraopptng) and T. chllonis whtch were highly safe to coccmelhds populatton and were at par With untreated control In case of spider population, the max1mum population 5.21 (30 DAS}, 7 21 (45 OAS) and 9 66 (60 DAS) was recorded tn untreated control and was followed by ma1ze+cowpea (mteraopptng} and T chtlonts The m1n1mum populabon 1 14 (30 DAS} 1.50 (45 DAS) and 2.85 (60 DAS) of sp1ders was found 1n treatment mdoxacarb and followed by endosulfan respecttvely. The maXIITlUm gra1n yield of 48 21 qlha obtaned hom the lndoxacarb followed by endosutfan wrth the gran Yleld of 40.39 q/ha and imidacloprld With 38 08 q/ha The m1mmum grain yield of 21 16 q/ha was reported 1n untreated control The max1mum mcrease 1n grain y10ld of 27 05 q/ha over control and highest cost benefit ratto of 10 79 was recorded w1th the treatment of 1ndoxacarb and was followed by endosulfan. 1m1daclopnd 17 8 SL (7 mllkg seed). matze+cowpea (lntercropp!ng), and meemann respectively The maximum net proftt of Rs 21038 25/ha was obta1ned from the plots treated wtth 1ndoxacarb followed by endosulfan, 1mtdadopnd ma1ze+cowpea (1nterctopp1ng} and neemann WJth the net prof1t of 14953 50. 13041 75, 11011 25 and 9836 50 rupeeslha, resped1vely, whtle, the m1mmum net profit (Rs 4214 50 00/ha) was est1mated from the treatment of T. chilonts
