Abstract
This study was conducted to investigate egg quality traits in different breeds of chicken
(CARI Devendra, CARI Hitkari, CARI Priya, CARI Sonali, CARI Upkari, and Non-descript). A total
300 eggs were collected randomoly from farmer’s door and 120 from university farm. Soft shelled,
cracked, jumbo, very small sized, and abnormal eggs were not taken in sampling. The result showed
that the egg weight were significantly (P<0.01) higher in CARI-Sonali and CARI-Devendra. The egg
weight of CARI Hitkari and CARI Upkari were little lower and similar to non-descript breeds of
chicken. The mean shape index of chicken eggs was similar in all breeds of chicken except CARIDevendra
and CARI-Upkari. The overall mean for egg shell thickness (mm) in different breeds was
found to be 0.350±0.001. The overall mean for shell weight (gm) in six different breeds of chicken
was found to be 6.66±0.03.The mean yolk weight (gm) in different breeds of chicken also differ
significantly (P<0.01). CARI-Devendra birds had highest yolk weight in comparison to non-descript
chicken. Significant difference (P<0.01) in yolk colour was found in CARI Hitkari, CARI Priya,
CARI Sonali having similar yolk colour values. The yolk colour of CARI Upkari was comparable to
non-descript birds under study. The total cholesterol recorded in egg different breeds significantly
(p<0.05). The total protein in recorded for different groups differed significantly (p<0.05).
