Abstract
Molecular markers provide novel tools to differentiate between the various
grades of Indian rice, maintain fair-trade practices and to determine its
relationship with other rice groups in Oryza sativa. We have evaluated the
genetic diversity and patterns of relationships among the 24 rice genotypes
representative of the traditional Basmati, cross-bred Basmati and non-Basmati
rice varieties using RAPD,ISSR,SSR and STS markers. All the four marker
systems generated higher levels of polymorphism and could distinguish between
all the 24 rice cultivars. There were significant correlations between the Jaccard
coefficients obtained using the matrices of each single marker type and their
combined matrix. In the course of the present study, four RAPD and SSR
primers or five STS and ISSR primers are sufficient to differentiate all
varieties.Markers with high PIC values are very useful for estimating
relationships between varieties. Markers with low PIC values, on the other hand,
can be used to analyze chromosome regions of special interest . The value of
Resolving power can also be used as future reference data for selection of
primers for study using same primers we used in present study. The greater the
value of resolving power the more infonnation is provided by that particular
pnmer.
