The present investigation entitled" Genetic analysis of yield and quality components in linseed (Unum usitatissimum L.)" was undertaken to collect information on genetic parameter for yield and quality components including fatty acid profile from a 10 parents diallel mating design in linseed at the Crop Research Centre, S. V. P. University of Agriculture and Technology, Meerut, (U.P.) during rabi 2006-07 under timely sown conditions. The data were recorded on grain yield per plant and 17 other traits. The analysis of variance revealed significant differences among the genotypes. The component of variance analysis indicated both additive and dominance variances to be highly significant for all the traits except number of seeds per capsule and linoleic acid content with regard to additive component of genetic variation. The estimate of F parameter indicated preponderance of recessive alleles for number of capsules per plant and linolenic acid content while in all other traits dominant alleles were quite frequent. Highly significant variances were noticed for both general and specific combining ability for all the characters. The magnitude of gca and sea variances, for all the attributes indicated that both additive and non-additive genetic effects were involved in the expression of these traits. Parwati, Padmini, Shekhar, J-23 and T-397 were good general combiner for yield, oil content and yield components. High significant heterosis was recorded in Himalini x Heera, Parwati x Himalini, Shekhar x Heera, Heera x Garima, Himalini x Padmini, Parwati x Padmini, Parwati x Shekhar and Shekhar x Padmini for seed yield per plant as well as other yield and quality contributing traits. For breeding better varieties, the promising parents viz; Parwati, Padmini, Shekhar, J-23 and T-397 which are having high gca effects in desirable direction may be incorporated e to have better genotype for yield and quality components.
