Abstract
A field investigation was carried out to study the "Efficacy of neem cake and
granular insecticides against maize stem borer, Clzilo parte/Ius (Swinhoe)" in
randomized block design with three replications at Crop Research Centre of Sardar
Vallabhbhai. Patel University of Agriculture and Technology, Meerut during Kharif2013.
During the crop season, eight insect species were recorded to damage maize crop at
different stages of crop growth. Among the insect species, maize stem borer, Chilo
parte/lus (Swinhoe) was recorded as a major pest. The Aphid Rhopalosiphum maidis
(Fitch) was found damage the crop moderately whiles other species in sporadic on crop.
However, the population of other insect species was below the ETL and considered as a
minor pest of maize.
Efficacy of different insecticides viz., fipronil 0.3% OR, chlorantraniliprole 0.4%
OR, carbof\lfan 30, cartap hydrochloride 40, phorate 10 0 and neem cake 1% were
evaluated against C. partellus. Data revealed that chlorantraniliprole 0.4% OR @ 10
kg/ha and fipronil 0.3% GR @ 15kg/ha was found to be most effective insecticides in
reducing the population of maize stem borer followed by carbofuran 3G @ 20kg/ha,
which was at par with cartap hydrochloride 4G @ 20kg/ha. Phorate 1 OG @ 1 Okglha and
neem cake 1% @ 1 OOkg/ha was found to be least effective in reducing the damage of
stem borer and aphids. The highest grain yield was obtained from chlorantraniliprole
0.4% GR treated plots whereas, highest cost benefit ratio is obtained from fipronil 0.3%
GR due to -low cost of chemical.
