Abstract
thesis titled "Studies on ocular affections in Dogs" presents a comprehensive study conducted at the Department of Veterinary Surgery and Radiology in collaboration with the Teaching Veterinary Clinical Complex, SVPUAT, COVAS, Meerut. The aim of this study was to examine the hospital incidence, diagnose, and evaluate different ocular affections in dogs, as well as assess the efficacy of medical and surgical management techniques for treating these conditions.
Over the period from November 2021 to March 2023, a total of 762 dog cases presenting with surgical affections were evaluated at TVCC COVAS Meerut, with 64 cases specifically related to ocular conditions. The overall incidence of ocular affections in dogs was found to be 8.39%. The cornea and sclera were the most commonly affected parts, accounting for 57.82% of cases.
Among various ocular conditions, Pugs exhibited the highest incidence, followed by beagles, with a greater prevalence among male dogs. Age-wise, the 0-1 years age group showed the highest incidence, with corneal ulcers being most common in the 1-2 years age group.
The study explored both medical and surgical approaches for managing different ocular affections. Superficial corneal ulcers responded well to topical treatments, while deep corneal ulcers required surgical interventions such as a third eyelid flap technique and tarsorrhaphy
Traumatic proptosis cases were managed through either enucleation or tarsorrhaphy, and cherry eye cases were effectively treated using Morgan's pocket technique or excision of the prolapsed gland. Cases of keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS) were successfully treated with a combination of topical agents and cyclosporine.
Corneal opacity cases exhibited improvement after medical

treatment involving topical NSAIDs, antibiotics, corticosteroid eye drops, and cyclosporine in cases with melanosis. Corneal edema cases showed positive outcomes with topical hyperosmotic agents, antibiotics, and steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.
