Abstract
Callistemon citrinus is a plant species that has been used for various medicinal purposes. In this
Study, the phytochemical constituents of the methanol, ethanol, acetone and aqueous extract of
Callistemon citrinus were anlysed. The results showed that all the extracts contained
alkaloids, flavonoid, tannins, saponins, and phenols.however the highest concentration of these
phytochemicals was found in the methanol extract followed by the ethanol, acetone, and aqueous
extract.
Alkaloids are nitrogen-containing compounds that have a wide range of biological activities such
as analgesic, antitumor, and anti-inflammatory properties. Flavonoids are polyphenolic
compounds that have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anticancer properties. Trumins are
polyphenolic compounds that have astringent and antioxidant properties. Saponins are glycosides
that have antifungal, antibacterial, and anti-inflammatory properties. Phenols are organic
compow1ds that have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.
The methanol extract showed the highest concentration of alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins,
saponins, and phenols. This may be due to the fact that methanol is a polar solvent that can
extract a wide range ofphytochemicals from plant materials. The ethanol extract also contained a
high concentration of these phytochemicals, followed by the aceton~ and aqueous extracts.
