Abstract

The present investigation entitled “Study on Present Status of Mango Orchardists in Meerut District of Uttar Pradesh” with the objectives of socio-economic background of mango orchardists, knowledge level of mango orchardists regarding in relation to different practices of mango production technology, adoption level with respect to various practices of mango production technology, constraints of mango orchardists and suggest suitable measures for improvement of quality mango production. The study was conducted in Meerut district of Uttar Pradesh, two blocks selected purposively. From each block four villages were selected randomly and from each village ten respondent were selected randomly. Thus, the total sample size was of 80 respondents for investigation. It was found that 41.25 per cent mango orchardists were belongs to the age group of 46-60 years, 52.50 per cent were belongs to Other Backward Caste, literate 86.25 per cent, family size of medium category 5-8 members 53.75 per cent. The maximum orchardists were having land holding size 2-4 ha of land 43.75 per cent, 43.75 per cent respondents were belongs to the annual income category between Rs. 1, 00,000/- to 2, 00,000/-, 48.75 per cent orchardists were participating in more than one organizational activities. The maximum orchardists were having high level of knowledge about improved varieties 56.25 per cent, harvesting procedure 63.75 per cent and marketing procedure 48.75 per cent. Majority of the respondent were having medium level of knowledge about irrigation practices 72.50 per cent, yields takes to bearing of fruit plant 67.50 per cent and recommended manure and fertilizers application 66.25 per cent. The orchardists were reported under low level of knowledge about use of plant growth regulators 55.00 per cent, packing of mango for disposal at short and long distance market 45.00 and 42.50 per cent respectively. The maximum orchardist were fully adopted about marketing procedure 48.75 per cent, partially adopted about suitable inter crops in mango orchards 62.50 per cent, improved variety 61.25 per cent and irrigation practices 58.75 per cent and not adopted about use of plant growth regulators 78.75 per cent, plantation practices 56.25 per cent and recommended manure and fertilizers application 51.25 per cent. The mango orchardists faced the constraints in adoption of mango production technology i.e. maximum orchardists were related to lack of information about suitable inter-cropping 93.75 per cent, unavailability of improved varieties in govt. nursery 92.50 per cent, testing laboratory are not available 91.25 per cent in the study area.
