Abstract
The present investigation entitled "Study the status of sugarcane growers regarding sugarcane production
technology and marketing in Muzaffarnagar district of Uttar Pradesh", was conducted survey programme from
Morna and Khatuli block of Muzaffarnagar under the grant of S. V. P. University of Agriculture and Technology
Modipuram, Meerut (U.P.) during 2009-10 under sub-tropical climatic conditions of Western Uttar Pradesh.
Among the study on following objectives, socio-economic status of sugarcane growers, knowledge level of
sugarcane growers regarding sugarcane production technology, constraints faced by sugarcane growers regarding
sugarcane production technology and marketing, suggestions for improvement in sugarcane production and
marketing.
The result revealed that respondents were having higher medium age group 45 %, young age group 6.25
%, other back ward caste 87.5 %, schedule caste 2.5 %, high school education status 23.75%, post graduate2.5%,
90%married,1 Oo/ounmarried, joint family 63.75%, not membership of any institution 65%, formal institutional
membership 35%, semi medium land holding size farmers 32.5%, large land holding farmers 1.25%, radio I T.V
87.5%, Extension workers 3.75%, is the source of technical knowledge and 72.5% respondents were having
electrical connection at home and at farm 72.5%, 1.25% respondents were having electricity at farm.
The knowledge level of sugarcane growers regarding sugarcane cultivation practices, the respondents
were having 48.75% fully known and 8.75% respondents were having not known about improved varieties,72.5%
respondents were having about the field preparation, 1.25% respondents not known about field preparation,95%
respondents fully known about the planting system, 87.5% respondents fully known about the irrigation, 91 .25%
respondents fully known about the harvesting, 95% respondents fully known about the sowing time, 71 .25%
respondents partially known about the dose of fertilizers and manures, 50% respondents partially known about the
weed management, 52.5% respondents partially known about the plant protection measurement, 42.5%
respondents partially known about the improved variety, 58.75% respondents were having fully known regarding
seed preparation, 56.25 % respondents were having fully known about seed rate, 48.75 % respondent were not
known regarding soil treatment.
The sugarcane respondents face the constraints related to production technology i.e. lack of knowledge
about application of balance fertilizers (82.5%), Untimely availability of electricity (81.25%), Government tube-wells
are not available (77.5%), Lack of knowledge about improved plant protection measurement against pest and
diseases (75%), Unavailability of labour at proper time (73.75%), Higher price of critical inputs (38.75%), High cost
of irrigation charges(35%) Unavailability of seed at proper time (28.75%), Lack of knowledge about improved
(23.5%), The sugarcane respondents face the constraints related to marketing i.e. untimely payment system in
government and private sugar factories (90%), late starting and early closed of sugarcane factory (78.75%), delayed
