Abstract
The present investigation entitled “Ecological studies and integrated pest management
(IPM) of major insect-pests of basmati rice” was carried out during Kharif, 2018 and 2019 at Crop
Research Centre of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel University of Agriculture and Technology, Meerut
(U.P.). During the crop season (Kharif, 2018 and 2019), three insect-pests, yellow stem borer,
Scirpophaga incertulas leaf folder, Cnaphalocrocis medinalis and brown plant hopper,
Nilaparvata lugens were recorded on basmati rice at different stages of crop growth. The
infestation of yellow stem borer started from third week of August and reached its peak in second
week of September. The leaf folder infestation started in second week of August and reached its
peak in last week of September. The population of brown plant hopper appeared from second week
of August and reached its peak in fourth week of September during both the years. The avoidable
loss was recorded 46.13 and 47.09 percent during Kharif, 2018 and 2019, respectively. The
efficacy of different pest management strategies evaluated against S. incertulas, C. medinalis and
N. lugens, the Treatment- 5 (release of parasitoid, Trichogramma japonicum @ 1,00,000/ha at 30
DAT + one spray of cartap hydrochloride 50 SP @ 800 g/ha at 50 DAT + one spray of rynaxypyr
20 SC @ 150 ml /ha at 65 DAT) was performed best among all treatments followed by Treatment-
4 (release of parasitoid, T. japonicum @ 1,00,000/ha at 30 DAT + one spray of cartap
hydrochloride 50 SP @ 800 g/ha at 50 DAT + one spray of lancergold 51.8 SP (acephate 50 % +
imidacloprid 1.8 %) @ 750 g/ha at 65 DAT). The highest grain yield 36.15 and 37.21 q/ha
recorded from Treatment- 5 during Kharif, 2018 and 2019, respectively. The maximum
incremental cost benefit ratio (1:9.12) from Treatment- 4 and minimum of 1:2.01 was recorded
from Treatment- 2 (release of parasitoid, T. japonicum @ 1,00,000/ha at 30 DAT + application of
neem oil 3 % @ 3000 ml/ha at 50 DAT + one spray of Entomopathogenic nematode @ 500 g/ha at
65 DAT).
