A Study on Migrational Attitude of Rural Youth Towards Urban Areas in Eastern Uttar Pradesh

Abstract
The present study was carried out during the year 2022-23 in four districts of Eastern part of Uttar Pradesh namely Chandauli, Varanasi, Deoria and Gorakhpur to know the migrational attitude of rural youth along with the factors responsible for migration and empowerment needs. The sample size of 160 rural youth was randomly selected for the study and data were collected through face to face personal interview method. Multi stage sampling technique and descriptive research degin were adopted for the study. The study revealed that the maximum rural youth (47.50%) were related to middle age group i.e. 25-30 years , (55.63 %) of rural youth were other backward caste and (57.50%) of rural youth were having were educational status up to graduate level. Study also revealed that majority of the rural youth (83.13%) were having possession of farm skills and about (35.62%) were rural youth having marginal land holding i.e. up to 1ha and almost half (50.62%) of the rural youth involved in small business enterprises as their occupation. Nearly half of the rural youth (48.12%) having income between the range of Rs. 2,00,000-3,00,000 income per annum from agriculture and (30.63%) having annual income above 300,000 from other sources. The study showed that majority of rural youth (80.63%) have positive attitude towards migration and (19.37%) were having negative attitude towards migration. It was also clear from the study that maximum respondents (85.00%) were having positive attitude and (15.00%) of rural youth were having negative attitude towards farming as an enterprise. As per investigation, “unstable income in agriculture” with (GMS 77.87) was the major push factor for the migration of rural youth, while on the other hand the major pull factors for rural youth migration was “access to better job opportunities & higher income possibilities” with (GMS 90.19). Exploring the empowerment needs was also the major objective of the study and it revealed that “open training institutes on various entrepreneurial skills developments for job” was major empowerment need with (GMS 75.83).
